As our furry friends grow old, their immune systems can also start to slow down. This can mean more allergies, nervousness, and less alert and present than they used to be.

Yet these are just the mild signs. If left to deteriorate, a weakened immune system can leave dogs vulnerable to more severe symptoms, like blood sugar issues and infections.

The good news is that with Honest Paws Wellness USDA Organic, Full-Spectrum Hemp with Naturally Occurring CBD, you can help your dog support a healthy immune system. It can also help give your pet calmer moods and a healthier brain to match.

CBD is everywhere these days.

Organic labeling appears on our food and many health and beauty products.

But what does organic actually mean? What specifies something as organic?

And what makes any CBD brand the best organic CBD oil for dogs?

What is CBD Oil for Dogs?

CBD, short for “cannabidiol”, is one of the many unique chemical compounds found in the cannabis varieties, marijuana and hemp.

More specifically, CBD is a cannabinoid that gives the plant its beneficial, therapeutic profile. The sticky resinous oil contains antifungal, antibacterial, and insecticidal properties that protect the health of the cannabis plant.

But cannabinoids serve other purposes as well. As chemicals, they interact with our body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS). The endocannabinoid system is responsible for maintaining homeostasis in the body (the balancing of biological functions such as appetite, mobility, and more).

As a result, CBD can be very beneficial for human health as well as for pets. In fact, as a pet parent, you may be surprised by the many ways in which CBD products can support a healthy immune system and enhance the physical and mental well-being of your four-legged friend.

Common Cannabinoids

CBD and THC are the two most popular cannabinoids in cannabis plants. As such, they’re also the most popular cannabinoids found in cannabis oil.

While both CBD and THC can have significant potential health benefits for a person or animal, there are key differences between the two that are important to understand.

THC, short for “Tetrahydrocannabinol,” is the chemical responsible for marijuana's psychoactive effect, also known as “getting high.”

Unlike THC, however, CBD is non-psychoactive. Using CBD, therefore, will not make a person feel “high.”

This difference in effects is due to the fact that CBD and THC react differently with the receptors in the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS). Chemically, THC reacts with the endocannabinoid system’s cannabinoid 1 receptors (CB1). The CB1 receptors are found primarily in the central nervous system and in the brain. The "high" or psychoactive experience associated with recreational or medical marijuana is caused by activating CB1 receptors.

Another important difference between THC and CBD is their legality in the United States.

CBD products are legal in all 50 states as long as they’re derived from the hemp plant (one of the varieties of the cannabis plant, with the other variety being marijuana). CBD derived from the marijuana plant, however, can only be purchased in states where marijuana has been legalized.

Extraction

So how do we access CBD in the first place?

First off, CBD needs to be extracted and separated from the plant material. During this process, CBD extraction will produce a nutrient-rich, highly concentrated oil that is refined for optimum bioavailability. Bioavailability refers to the body's ability to absorb the therapeutic ingredients.

The resulting refined CBD oil can then be added to the chosen CBD oil product, which can take the form of a tincture, topical, capsule, or edible--just to name a few examples. In the holistic pet wellness space, you’ll typically find CBD products such as a CBD tincture, a CBD chew, or a CBD bite, based on the need and applications desired.

Sometimes, CBD can also be added to a carrier oil like MCT oil, coconut oil or hemp seed oil.

Full Spectrum CBD Oil

Full spectrum CBD is CBD oil that contains all the benefit-rich cannabinoids and terpenes that the hemp plant has to offer.

Naturally, CBD is the primary cannabinoid found in a full spectrum product. However, there are also naturally-occurring compounds such as CBN, CBG, and hints of THC (less than 0.3%). This natural blend of compounds tends to amp up the CBD oil's potency and create a phenomenon known as the entourage effect. (Rest assured, because full spectrum CBD is derived from the hemp plant, the trace amounts of THC found in a full spectrum CBD oil will have no psychoactive effects).

The entourage effect is based on recent studies that have found that combining all the cannabis plant's compounds work exceptionally better than using any of the compounds individually.

Terpenes, for instance, which are found in full spectrum CBD products, give the plant its unique smell and taste and vary widely within plant varieties. These terpenes complement the potential CBD benefits and can be chosen to target specific needs that you or your furry companion may have.

Please note: for those utilizing CBD oil, the correct CBD oil dosage should be mentioned on the product you purchase. If you opt for a tincture for the CBD oil, you can easily regulate the dosage yourself using the provided dropper.

CBD Isolate

CBD isolate refers to pure CBD that is separated from the cannabinoids and other compounds found in cannabis. The result is a product that is usually 99% or more pure CBD.

CBD isolate is surprisingly versatile when it comes to consumption and consumer use. It’s especially effective for users who have sensitivities to other types of cannabinoids, such as THC.

Like most full spectrum CBD products, CBD isolate can be prepared easily and measured exactly for use in various areas of consumption and other consumer products, such as in a CBD tincture (CBD oil) or a CBD supplement.

With that said, studies have proven that full spectrum CBD oil is more effective than CBD isolate, as it also contains all of the benefit-rich cannabinoids and terpenes of the cannabis plant instead of solely CBD on its own.

Organic CBD Oil

The Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018 changed how hemp is defined

These clarifying changes removed significant restrictions on the growth, production, distribution, and use of hemp and hemp products.

Hemp is now classified separately from marijuana and is no longer an illegal controlled substance under federal law. This new distinction contributes to the recent explosion of interest in CBD and CBD-related products like CBD hemp oil and CBD oil tinctures.

Organic Hemp

Hemp has an amazing ability to draw up toxins from the soil, so unless your CBD is extracted from organically grown hemp, your product could contain contaminants leached from the soil. Strict compliance with organic growing methods is essential.

In the United States, the 2014 U.S. Farm Bill includes criteria for certifying certain hemp crops as organic. Typically, the methods of growing organic hemp organically mean:

  • Planting organic seeds that have not been treated, exposed to, or modified by chemicals

  • The soil is known to be free of toxins

  • Hemp is grown without harmful growth hormones, pesticides, fungicides or herbicides

  • Crops are grown without the antibiotics

  • Hemp is grown and processed without the use of radiation

There must be strict adherence to the guidelines set for every step of the process, from soil management to the processing of plant material.

Before any crop or product can be labeled as organic, it also needs to be given official certification.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) sets the standards for organic processes and the certification process. Certification decisions are based on:

  • General toxicity

  • The effects on human health

  • The potential impact on the ecosystem

  • Compatibility with sustainable agriculture

  • Availability of alternatives

  • The probability of causing contamination during use, disposal, or manufacturing

  • The potential for interaction with other materials

Certified Organic CBD Oil

Different levels of organic certification can be granted. The USDA describes three levels of organic certification:

  • 100 Percent Organic – All ingredients and processes are certified organic.

  • Organic – contains a minimum of 95 percent organic ingredients with some approved non-organic agricultural ingredients.

  • Made with Organic Ingredients – contains at least 70 percent organically produced ingredients. There are many detailed constraints regarding the ingredients that comprise the inorganic portion.

Quality Organic CBD: What To Look For

Hemp can also be grown by organic methods without receiving certified organic status. In this case, a third-party lab is used to test the safety and quality of the CBD oil.

It’s important to note, however, that with interest in CBD continuously increasing, a competitive atmosphere can cause some companies to mislead consumers. These companies may very well make false claims about their CBD products (especially CBD pet products) being completely organic when they really aren’t.

As a pet parent, this is where you should beware. No matter what CBD product you opt to use for your dog or cat, whether it’s a CBD oil or a CBD chew, it’s absolutely essential to know what to look for in a high-quality CBD product.

The most reputable CBD manufacturers will insist upon using organic methods and non-GMO hemp source plants.

Furthermore, batch testing by a third-party ensures the purity and potency of your CBD product.

Another detail to note: only search for CBD products from retailers who rely on the safest CBD CO2 extraction methods and are willing to disclose the results of third-party product testing to verify the safety of your CBD.

Best Organic CBD Oil for Dogs: Bottom Line

The 2014 U.S. Farm Bill changes for hemp classification removed the significant restrictions on the growth, production, distribution, and use of hemp and hemp products, allowing for a wider variety of CBD pet oil products to be available.

There are different levels of USDA classifications regarding what is considered "organic.” The ingredients and processes used to grow the hemp and manufacture the CBD products determine what organic classification is given.

However, with interest in CBD growing more and more every day, some companies can mislead consumers with false claims about their so-called organic CBD products.

As a pet parent, it’s absolutely essential to thoroughly research pet CBD products and their respective manufacturing processes.

Choose companies that adhere to organic growing processes and manufacturing guidelines as well as third-party lab testing to ensure a high-quality safe product for your pet.

In addition to being USDA Organic, you also want to ensure that the CBD product you select is human grade, 100% natural, vegan, non-GMO, soy free, dairy free, corn free, and gluten free. Finally, only select a CBD product for your dog or cat that is certified with the National Animal Supplement Council, which ensures the product is of the best quality for your furry friend.
