CBD (Cannabidiol) and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) come from the Cannabis Sativa plant (aka marijuana). Don’t get the two confused, however.
Per the 1937 Marihuana Tax Act, the seeds and stalks of the cannabis sativa plant are exempt from federal regulations. This is because they do not contain, or contain extremely small amounts, of “resin” (THC).
So, similar to olive or coconut oil, CBD is one of many plant-extracts.
However, as is the case with wine, tomato sauce, and most any plant-based product, the methods used to grow and process these plants can result in products of dramatically different qualities.
So, when choosing a CBD oil for your pup (or cat or horse), here’s what you want to look out for.
First, the extraction method. This refers to the technology the manufacturer uses to extract - or pull - CBD from the hemp stalk itself.
In order of best to worst, here’s what you want to look out for:
- Supercritical carbon dioxide extraction (best)
- Sub-critical carbon dioxide extraction
- Pharmaceutical grade ethanol extraction (not harmful, but can kill the plant’s waxes, leading to a less effective product)
- Solvent-based extraction (involves use of petroleum-based chemicals like propane, hexane and butane; worst)
In terms of supercritical and sub-critical, both result in a high purity, all natural, non-toxic and non-flammable product. But because these processes are more expensive, products manufactured using these methods can cost more.
As is the case with most things in life, however, you get what you pay for. And with your pet’s health, and potentially life, on the line, using substandard products may have little to no effect (or in some cases, cause more harm than good).
Second, you’ll want to look for CBD oils extracted from 100% organic hemp stalks, also known as industrial hemp. This is particularly true if your pet is suffering from seizures or aging-related pain.
Just like any other plant, hemp stalks grown using non-organic methods can absorb toxic, pro-inflammatory pesticides, antibiotics, and hormones. These, in turn, can aggravate and excite the nervous system and inflammation centers that lie at the heart of your pet’s seizures and arthritis.
The result? More pain and suffering.
This is because cannabinoids are fat soluble (meaning our bodies absorb and process them in our fat cells). Because of this, consuming CBD oil with a (healthy) fat source can improve your pet’s ability to absorb the CBD’s health-boosting properties.
To address this, manufacturers add coconut oil to their blends. This is because coconut oils have high amounts of anti-inflammatory, antibiotic medium chain triglycerides (known as MCTs).
However, if you really want to take things to the next level, we suggest you look for companies that use MCT Oil instead. This is because high-quality MCT oils contain a wider variety of health-boosting acids compared to coconut oil.
Last, you’ll want to look for a CBD oil that publicly publishes a Purity Report from a third party testing center. This report not only highlights the oil’s THC content but will also discuss the presence - or lack - of heavy metals.
THC? What? I thought you said my dog wouldn’t get high from this?
Relax. To meet federal requirements the hemp stalks used to create CBD products cannot contain more than 0.3% THC (while the leafy marijuana plants people use to get high contain anywhere from 5-35% or more).
So, when shopping, what you want to look for is a high concentration of pure CBD and 0.3% or less THC (despite federal regulations, some manufacturers cut corners and end up creating products with concentrations above the legal limit).
So, where might you find such a product for your pet?
