The Bottom Line:

  • You can make your dog CBD treats from scratch, or add CBD oil to existing pre-made regular treats. You can even add CBD oil to frozen dog treats for a snack on a hot day.

  • For baked dog treats, a suitable oven temperature for CBD is between 320°F to 356°F only. Anything hotter than 356°F will cause the active CBD oil to evaporate. Make sure your CBD oil is pet friendly and hemp-derived.

Can I Make My Own CBD Dog Treats?

Tips for Making CBD Dog Treats

To make the perfect CBD dog treats, you need to find the right, high-quality pet CBD oil, calculate the amount of CBD oil for your dog, and then start baking.

Choosing CBD Oil for Dogs

Not all CBD oils for dogs are created equally, so it is important to know what to look out for when pet CBD oil shopping. Here are some quick pointers for choosing the right CBD oil:

  • Hemp-Derived ONLY! Avoid oils that contain more than 0.3% THC as THC is extremely toxic to dogs.

  • Full Spectrum. A full-spectrum CBD oil contains various beneficial cannabinoids (CBDs) and other health-boosting compounds like flavonoids, terpenes, and omega oils.

  • Lab Tested. A Certificate of Analysis shows an in-depth report of CBD content, as well as the presence of any impurities.

  • Hemp CBD Oil and NOT Hemp Seed Oil. While still beneficial, hemp seed oil does not contain any CBDs. Check the label carefully.

How Much CBD do You put in Dog Treats?

Based on the general CBD oil use guidelines, dogs should take between 1 and 5 milligrams of CBD per 10 pounds of body weight per day. We suggest using our Honest Paws CBD Oil for Dogs Dosage Calculator to determine the right amount of CBD oil for your pup.

Once you have calculated your dog's single dose, multiply it by the number of treats you wish to get out of the recipe. For example, if your dog needs 10 mg of CBD per day and you plan on making ten treats, you should add 100 mg of CBD oil to the mixing bowl.

Baking with CBD Oil

baking with cbd oil for dogs

Baking with CBD oil can be fun and simple – you just need to follow some basic rules and principles. Here are the few rules you need to know before adding CBD oil to your mixing bowl:

  • For baked dog treats, a suitable oven temperature for CBD is between 320°F to 356°F only. Anything hotter than 356°F will cause the active CBD oil to evaporate.

  • Before adding CBD oil to your dog treat recipe, infuse it into fat. This can be cooking oil, coconut oil, or butter. Blend the CBD hemp oil and fat over low heat.

  • Store CBD baked goods or no-bake treats in an airtight container in a cool, dark place like a refrigerator. This is because both heat and light can destroy the active cannabinoids from the oil.

  • CBD oils that are flavored need to be paired with complementary ingredients for the best taste. Dogs may not be particularly picky, but they still enjoy tasty combinations.

  • Freezing CBD edibles will not destroy the CBD potency and is a great solution if you want to bake in bulk and give those dog treats a longer shelf life.

Can a Dog Overdose on CBD Treats?

A dog cannot overdose on CBD oil, so do not let this be a concern. Even if you add an extra teaspoon of CBD oil in the CBD dog treats recipe, worst-case scenario, your dog will sleep off the effects.

In fact, finding the right CBD dose for your dog will take some trial and error period of experimentation. It is recommended to start with a lower amount and then gradually increase it as your dog gets used to the new ingredient in its daily treats.

How to Make CBD Dog Treats

You can either put the apron on, roll up your sleeves, make your dog CBD treats from scratch, or add CBD oil to existing pre-made regular treats if running on a tight schedule.

Make CBD Treats From Scratch

There are a few different approaches, so pick the one that is easy for you and tasty for your dog.

1. Frozen CBD Dog Treats

Frozen dog treats are perfect to cool your dog down for warmer seasons. You can add the CBD oil to the batch before separating it into individual portions.

Alternatively, you can do something as simple as filling ice trays with low-salt doggy bone broth or plain yogurt and dropping the CBD quantity into each ice division.

2. No-Bake CBD Dog Treats

This works best for recipes with an oil or fatty substance as a base. Something like peanut butter or coconut oil would be perfect. Just mix the CBD oil into the fat, making sure it is well incorporated.

No-bake treats are usually softer than baked treats, meaning they are great for older dogs with sensitive gums or toothless pups. You can also freeze no-bake treats on a cookie sheet and defrost them when needed.

3. Freshly Baked CBD Dog Treats

This approach takes extra care when it comes to oven temperatures.

When baking CBD dog treats, the key to success is lowering the oven temperatures while increasing the baking time. To make things even more fun, buy a cute bone-shaped cookie cutter.

Add CBD to Existing Treats

You can also easily add CBD oil to a dog treat that you bought from the store. Just pick a treat that is porous and give it some time to absorb. This is a good backup plan if you are not comfortable making your own CBD dog treats.

CBD Oil Dog Treat Recipes

Making CBD dog treats for your dog does not have to be complicated or time-consuming – just simple and tasty. With simplicity in mind, here are some of our favorite CBD dog treat recipes.

Peanut Butter and Banana Ice Cream

Bananas are nutritionally dense and rich in potassium, while peanut butter adds taste and texture. Mixing these ingredients into the perfect summer treats for dogs is super easy and will not take more than a couple of minutes.

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup peanut butter

  • 4 soft bananas

  • CBD oil

Tip: Skip adding CBD oil and use Honest Paws CBD Peanut Butter; 1/2 cup = 40 mg of CBD oil. Divided into eight treats means your dog will have 5 mg of CBD per treat, which is the perfect amount of CBD oil for small dogs.

Baking Directions:

  1. Peel, slice, and then freeze the bananas.

  2. Once frozen, place the banana slices into a blender until they become ice-cream-like. Scrape the sides down to ensure proper consistency.

  3. Combine your CBD oil and peanut butter (unless you follow our tip and use Honest Paws CBD Peanut Butter)

  4. Add the CBD peanut butter to the ice cream and mix well.

  5. Separate into cups or silicone molds according to the CBD portion needed for your dog.

Baked Sweet Potato Cookies

There is nothing better than mixing CBD oil with other health-boosting ingredients like, for example, sweet potatoes. Potatoes are a great source of vitamins A, B, and C. They are also rich in potassium, carbohydrates, and iron.

Ingredients:

  • 2 medium sweet potatoes (cooked and cooled)

  • ½ cup coconut flour

  • ¼ cup gelatin powder (optional)

  • ½ cup coconut oil (softened)

  • 1 egg

  • 1-2 TBSP water

  • baking soda

  • CBD (portioned according to your dog's needs)

Baking Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

  2. Add CBD oil into the coconut oil, then mix it in with all the other ingredients to form a dough.

  3. Calculate the number of portions you want according to your CBD potency and form dough into balls. Flatten the balls.

  4. Place the flattened balls on a baking sheet and bake for 20 minutes until lightly browned on the edges.

  5. Allow to cool completely (out of your dog's reach) and store in an airtight container in the fridge or the freezer.

No-Bake Pumpkin and Turmeric Balls

Pumpkin has loads of benefits for dogs, including soothing upset stomachs. On the other side, colorful turmeric is a superfood with natural anti-inflammatory properties. This no-bake treats recipe is an excellent choice if your pup prefers spicy snacks.

Ingredients:

  • ¾ cup pureed, cooked pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling)

  • 2 TBSP coconut oil, softened or warmed

  • Sprinkle of turmeric (1 tsp)

  • A pinch of black pepper

  • ⅓ - ½ cup coconut flour (or whole wheat flour if your dog tolerates it)

  • 1  ½ cups oats for a coating

  • CBD oil (based on your dog's weight).

Baking Directions:

  1. Combine the CBD oil with the tablespoon of coconut oil.

  2. Add to the pumpkin puree and mix in the spices.

  3. Add the flour slowly (the amount can vary depending on the moisture in the pumpkin).

  4. The dough may feel sticky but will firm up once chilled.

  5. Roll the dough on a flour-sprinkled surface and cut it into shapes using cookie cutters.

  6. Coat with the rolled oats.

  7. Place on parchment paper and into the fridge to set.
