Benefits of CBD Dog Treats
CBD products, like oils or edibles, are perfect for your pup. The oils can be administered at mealtime or straight into your dog's jaws for quick results. However, some doggo's may not love having a dropper shoved into their mouth.
That's where CBD dog treats offer the perfect solution. They're easy to administer, and once you've made the dog treat, you don't have to do any measuring. Each CBD dog treat will have the perfect amount of cannabidiol that your pup needs.
Another great benefit to making CBD dog treats at home is that you get to choose some of your pet's favorite ingredients. Does your dog love peanut butter?
Or perhaps they have an affinity for pumpkin puree or coconut oil? Maybe they go bananas for superfoods like blueberries, carrots, yogurt, or leafy greens?
Homemade CBD dog treats have the benefits of being tasty and irresistible when you can cater to your dog's unique preferences.
What is CBD? – A Quick Reminder
CBD stands for cannabidiol and is the naturally occurring compound of the hemp cannabis plant. It offers therapeutic and medicinal purposes for humans and dogs.
Manufacturers use CO2 extraction to create a full-spectrum CBD oil that is safe and free of impurities. Cannabidiol supports your dog's health by bringing balance to all the functions in the endocannabinoid system.
CBD Oil offers the following health benefits:
It helps to keep your pet calm and relaxed
Supports normal cardiovascular, immune, and neurological function
Can help with occasional discomfort
Eases joint stiffness due to normal daily exercise and activity
Supports healthy hip and joint health
May help with occasional or seasonal allergies
Supports skin health and moisture content
And much more
Tips for Making CBD Dog Treats
Make sure you always buy good quality CBD oil, whether adding it to treats or giving it to your dog as is. Not all CBD oils are created equally, so it's important to know what to look out for when you're shopping for CBD oil.
Here are some quick pointers for choosing the right CBD oil:
Hemp-Derived ONLY! Avoid oils that contain more than 0.3% THC.
Full Spectrum. If you ONLY want CBD in your doggie treats, then an isolate CBD oil will do the trick. However, a full-spectrum oil contains other beneficial cannabinoids, flavonoids, and terpenes.
Lab Tested. A Certificate of Analysis shows an in-depth report of CBD content, as well as the presence of any impurities.
Hemp CBD Oil and NOT Hemp Seed Oil. While still beneficial, the hemp seed oil is derived from only the hemp plant's seeds and does not contain any CBD. Check the label carefully.
How Much CBD Oil to Use
When it comes to the perfect CBD dosage for your pet, there may be some trial and error. We suggest consulting our dosage calculator and figuring out the suitable range for your dog based on their weight. Start by giving your dog the smallest dose of CBD oil.
If they tolerate it, increase it gradually. You know you're giving them too much if they display side effects such as diarrhea, lethargy, low blood pressure, or excessive thirst.
A general guideline is to fall within the range of 1-5 mg of CBD per 10lbs of body weight.
Once you know your dog's perfect dose, multiply it by the number of portions you wish you get out of a recipe. (A dog cannot overdose on CBD oil, so don't let this be a concern.) If your doggo needs 10 mg of CBD per day and you plan to make ten treat portions, you need to use 100 mg of CBD oil in your recipe.
Next, you'll need to consider the potency of the CBD oil that you're using.
Here is a breakdown of the amount of CBD in each of our oils here at Honest Paws:·
Our CBD oil for small dogs (under 25lbs) contains 125mg of CBD. Each full dropper from this bottle (1mL) will include 4 mg of CBD.
Our CBD oil for medium dogs (25-50lbs) contains 250mg of CBD. Each full dropper from this bottle (1mL) will contain 8mg of CBD.
Our CBD oil for large dogs (over 50lbs) contains 500mg of CBD. Each full dropper from this bottle (1mL) will contain 16mg of CBD.
Our CBD oil for extra strength needs contains 1000mg of CBD. Each full dropper from this bottle (1mL) will contain 33mg of CBD.
If you plan on making homemade treats with your CBD oil, it may be more cost-effective to go for the 1000 mg potency bottle. With one full dropper equaling 33 mg of CBD oil, the example of needing 100 mg in your 10-piece batch will only use three full droppers.
You can see how this will make your bottle go further than buying the 125 mg potency that would use 25 full droppers – almost an entire bottle.
What You Need to Know about Baking with CBD
When baking with CBD, the last thing you want to do is destroy the plant compound and make it useless. Before you add CBD oil to your mixing bowl, here are a few things you need to know about baking with CBD oil:
For baked dog treats, a suitable oven temperature for CBD is between 320°F to 356°F only. Anything hotter than 356°F will cause the active CBD oil to evaporate.
Before adding CBD oil to your dog treat recipe, infuse it into fat. This can be cooking oil, coconut oil, or butter. Blend the CBD hemp oil and fat over low heat.
Store CBD baked goods or no-bake treats in an airtight container in a cool, dark place like a refrigerator.
CBD oils that are flavored need to be paired with complementary ingredients for the best taste.
Freezing CBD edibles will not destroy the CBD potency and is a great solution if you want to bake in bulk and give those doggy treats a longer shelf life.
How to Make CBD Dog Treats
Finding the perfect mash-up for your pet's CBD dog treat is a labor of love. Whether you bake up a storm or throw together some no-bake treats, the important part is giving CBD to your pet consistently. It doesn't have to be complicated or time-consuming.
Bake CBD Treats From Scratch
There are a few different approaches, so pick the one you're comfortable with and can fit into your day. Either way, your pup is sure to appreciate your efforts.
1. Frozen Dog Treats
This is perfect for warmer seasons when your dog needs a frozen pick-me-up. You can add the CBD oil to the batch before separating it into individual portions, or you can do something as simple as filling ice trays with low-salt doggy bone broth and dropping the CBD quantity into each ice division.
2. Homemade No-Bake CBD Dog Treats
This works best if you can follow a recipe with an oil or fatty substance as a base. Something like peanut butter or coconut oil works best. Mix your CBD oil into the fat, making sure it's well incorporated.
No-bake treats are usually softer than baked treats, so this is great for older dogs with sensitive gums or toothless hounds. You can also freeze no-bake treats on a baking sheet and defrost as you need them.
3. Bake Your Own CBD Dog Treats
This one takes some care when it comes to oven temperatures. But if you're feeling confident (or have some experience making your cannabis brownies), then go ahead and buy a cute bone-shaped cookie cutter while you're at it. Lowering your oven temperature is fine if you're following a pre-loved doggie biscuit recipe; increase the duration and keep an eye on the dog treats.
Add CBD to Existing Treats
Run out of time or realized your doggy's stash of treats had reached its end? Don't fret. Adding CBD oil to a plain dog treat can also do the trick. Just pick a treat that is porous and give it some time to absorb. This is also a good backup plan if you're not comfortable with pouring your pricy CBD oil into the mixing bowl.
CBD Dog Treat Recipes
This is what you've been waiting for. Here are some easy recipes for your four-legged friend's hemp fix.
Super Simple Peanut Butter and Banana Ice Cream
You won't take more than five minutes to throw this together. Place these straight into the freezer for the perfect summer treat.
½ cup peanut butter
4 soft bananas
Tip: Skip adding CBD oil and use Honest Paws CBD Peanut Butter; 1/2 cup = 40 mg of CBD. Divided into eight treats means your dog will have 5 mg of CBD per treat, which is the perfect amount for small dogs.
Peel and slice bananas and freeze them.
Once frozen, place banana slices into a food processor and blend until it becomes ice-cream-like. Scrape the sides down until the consistency is right.
Combine your CBD oil and peanut butter (unless you follow our tip)
Add the CBD peanut butter to the ice cream and mix well.
Separate into cups, according to the CBD portion needed for your dog.
Baked Sweet Potato Doggie Dope Cookies
Potatoes are a great source of vitamins A, B, and C. They're also rich in potassium, carbohydrates, and iron. Give these baked sweet potato cookies a try.
2 medium sweet potatoes (cooked and cooled)
½ cup coconut flour
¼ cup gelatin powder (optional)
½ cup coconut oil (softened)
1-2 TBSP water
CBD (portioned according to your dog's needs)
Preheat oven to 350°F.
Add CBD oil into the coconut oil, then mix it in with all the other ingredients to form a dough.
Calculate the number of portions you want according to your CBD potency and form dough into balls. Flatten the balls.
Place on a baking sheet and bake for 20 minutes until lightly browned on the edges.
Allow to cool completely (out of your dog's reach) and store in an airtight container in the fridge or the freezer.
No-Bake Pumpkin and Turmeric Hemp Bliss Balls
Pumpkin has loads of benefits for dogs and is known to help with upset stomachs. Add to that some colorful turmeric, and you'll have a winner of a treat for your dog. This is great for the pup who prefers a spicy snack.
¾ cup pureed, cooked pumpkin
2 TBSP coconut oil, softened or warmed
Sprinkle of turmeric
A pinch of black pepper
⅓ - ½ cup coconut flour (or whole wheat flour if your dog tolerates it)
Rolled oats for a coating
Combine the CBD oil with the coconut oil.
Add to the pumpkin puree and mix in the spices.
Add the flour slowly. (The amount can vary depending on the moisture in the pumpkin.)
The dough may feel sticky but will firm up once chilled.
Roll into your desired portions according to the CBD used.
Coat with the rolled oats.
Place on parchment paper and into the fridge to set.
