When it comes to holistic options that support your dog’s health and happiness, it’s important to do as much research as you can before introducing something new to your four-legged friend’s healthcare regimen.

Chances are you’ve recently decided to dig a little deeper into the world of CBD for dogs, and on the way to learning all about the amazing benefits of CBD and getting all your CBD questions answered, you’re wondering if there are any side effects of CBD that you should be aware of.

The good news is that CBD is perfectly safe to offer your pup – as long as it’s derived from the hemp variety of the cannabis plant.

The cannabis plant (and in this case, we’re referring specifically to the Cannabis Sativa L. species) comes in two varieties: marijuana and hemp.

CBD, a naturally occurring compound in the plant, can be extracted from both of these varieties.

But again, only CBD from the hemp variety is safe for your canine companion! This is simply because the levels of THC (short for “"tetrahydrocannabinol”) found in the marijuana variety can be toxic to animals.

When purchasing CBD for your pup, only buy hemp-derived CBD (also commonly referred to as ‘hemp oil’).

Introducing CBD to Your Dog

As a rule of thumb, you should always introduce CBD (and any other supplement for that matter) in a gradual manner in order to allow your dog ample time to adjust to the new addition to his healthcare regimen.

You can learn more about our recommended CBD dosage for dogs here, but a general guideline is to fall within the range of 1-5 mg of CBD per 10lbs of body weight.

A 70-lb dog, therefore, could receive anywhere from 7-35mg of CBD a day.

In the beginning, you’ll want to start at the lower end of that range. Over the period of a week or two, you can slowly work your way up to a larger dose.

The CBD product you choose should offer recommendations on the daily amount of CBD your dog should receive based on its weight.

For example, the same 70-lb dog earlier mentioned would either receive 15mg worth of Honest Paws CBD bites/chews a day, or 16.7mg worth of Honest Paws CBD oil a day.

That said, some pet parents opt for a stronger dose – e.g. double or more the recommended amount – based on their dog’s unique situation.

Of course, if you're purchasing CBD oil, you might be wondering how many milligrams of CBD are in each milliliter of oil.

Here is a breakdown of the amount of CBD in each of our oils here at Honest Paws:

  • Our CBD Oil for small dogs (under 25lbs) contains 125mg of CBD. Each full dropper from this bottle (1mL) will contain 4 mg of CBD.

  • Our CBD oil for medium dogs (25-50lbs) contains 250mg of CBD. Each full dropper from this bottle (1mL) will contain 8mg of CBD.

  • Our CBD oil for large dogs (over 50lbs) contains 500mg of CBD. Each full dropper from this bottle (1mL) will contain 16mg of CBD.

  • Our CBD oil for extra strength needs contains 1000mg of CBD. Each full dropper from this bottle (1mL) will contain 33mg of CBD.

As you begin to give your dog CBD consistently, you’ll have the opportunity to observe any improvements to their situation and can adjust the dose as needed.

CBD Side Effects in Dogs

Fortunately, there are very little CBD side effects in dogs, which may explain why it’s such a popular holistic option among pet parents.

Below are the most commonly reported side effects, but every dog is different, and you may find that your four-legged friend exhibits none of these side effects at all.

The important thing is to closely monitor your dog’s behavior and activity levels when first introducing CBD (and to introduce it slowly!), so that you can best determine the perfect dose for your pup.

Most Common Reported Side Effects:

Dry Mouth

CBD can lead to a decrease in the production of saliva. This typically presents itself as an increased thirst in your pet. Ensure that your dog always has access to fresh water so that he can slake his thirst as needed.

Slight Lethargy

CBD can promote relaxation in animals, so your four-legged friend might seem a little sleepy when they’re first introduced to CBD. This may be ideal if you’re using CBD to help your dog manage stress or nervousness, but if your dog ever seems too drowsy, you can always adjust their dose accordingly.

Lowered Blood Pressure

If you administer too high a dose of CBD to your pet, it may cause a temporary drop in blood pressure. The drop itself is small, but it can create a temporary feeling of lightheadedness in your pup. Be sure to stay within the recommended dosage range for your dog’s weight whenever offering them CBD.

If you’ve ever introduced a new food or supplement to your dog’s healthcare regimen, you probably already know that diarrhea is almost an expected side effect. In this case, the gastrointestinal upset is not caused by the CBD itself but rather by the carrier oil that’s used in the product. This is why it’s important to slowly introduce CBD to your dog, as it gives his body time to acclimate. It’s also a good rule of thumb to offer CBD at mealtime as opposed to on an empty stomach.
