Your dog means the world to you. We get it. At Honest Paws, we're pet owners too.

So we know that when your furry companion isn’t feeling like themselves, it can be incredibly difficult.

Here at Honest Paws, we're happy to say that we feel like we’ve found an incredible way to help support the immune system in your four-legged friend: through a CBD tincture.

If you haven’t already heard of CBD and its potential health benefits, read on for everything you need to know about the exciting world of CBD!

CBD has been making waves in the holistic health space for both humans and animals.

Although CBD has been researched for the last three decades for its potential health benefits as a dietary supplement for animals, it’s only been in recent years that pet parents like us have been able to really reap those potential benefits for our fur children.

We know you have a lot of questions about this commonly misunderstood plant. So let’s get started!

What is CBD?

Cannabidiol, also known as CBD, is one cannabinoid of at least 113 that have been presently identified in the plant, cannabis. CBD has a variety of potential health benefits without the psychoactive properties of THC (short for tetrahydrocannabinol, the cannabinoid that people associate with “getting high”).

With all of the medicinal and therapeutic effects that CBD has to offer, it’s even more of a phenomenon that it has virtually zero toxicity to animals and humans, with some pet owners only noting slight drowsiness in their pets.

Because CBD is all natural and non-toxic, it’s quickly receiving the attention it deserves in the holistic health space, where the majority of mindful consumers are interested in products that come straight from nature and are free of toxins.

It’s no surprise then that so many pet parents have jumped onto the CBD bandwagon, using products like CBD drops to support a healthy immune system in their dog.

CBD Side Effects

Naturally, no two dogs are exactly alike. While one dog might react to a new supplement in a certain way, another may have no reaction at all. While the reactions are extremely mild when it comes to CBD, we always recommend for pet owners and each new CBD user to monitor their pet closely whenever any new product is introduced into the animal’s normal routine.

Keeping that in mind, the side effects of CBD are virtually nonexistent, and when they do occur, they tend to be very mild.

In humans, CBD might cause lethargy, changes in weight, tiredness, decreased or increased appetite, and diarrhea. Conversely, dogs are not affected by the same side effects. Some pet parents report that their dog is slightly lazier when CBD is first introduced. However, that’s typically the extent of any side effects that the dog may experience.

Again, although the side effects of CBD intake in dogs are virtually nonexistent, it’s always wise to implement best practices with any new product.

During the introduction stage of CBD, for instance, we encourage pet owners to start with a low dosage (just a few drops) and gradually work their way up to the recommended dosage. This way, your dog will receive all the potential benefits that CBD has to offer in a safe and controlled manner.

What is CBD for Dogs?

Due to its rise in popularity, CBD now comes in several different forms that are convenient to give to your dog.

From CBD oil to CBD dog bites to CBD chews, pet owners are able to choose the product that best fits their dog's wants and health needs.

However, when pet parents are starting off with CBD, we recommend exploring the vast world of CBD with a CBD tincture.

What is a CBD Tincture?

A tincture is an extract that is made by soaking plant matter in alcohol or vinegar. This process pulls out the plant matter’s active ingredients and concentrates them into a liquid.

Regarding CBD, an oil tincture is made by dissolving the cannabis plant in alcohol.

A great benefit of CBD tinctures is that they help pet parents have total control over how much tincture oil their dog is receiving. This is made possible because the CBD tincture comes equipped with a dropper that allows you to either administer the CBD oil directly into your dog’s mouth or administer it at mealtime.

The CBD tincture oil also allows for a gradual introduction to the CBD product. Pet parents are able to know exactly how much CBD oil drops their dog ingests.

Breaking Down CBD

Due to the constant studies showing just how beneficial CBD can be for both humans and animals alike, it wouldn’t be much of a surprise if, in the next handful of years, a CBD oil tincture becomes a commonplace item in most people‘s medicine cabinets!

However, at the moment, the herb still causes quite a bit of confusion. Because CBD is derived from cannabis, people still associate it with some negative misconceptions.

One of our goals here at Honest Paws is to clear up those misconceptions, because at the end of the day, we want as many people and animals as possible to benefit from CBD products, and the main way to do that is through education.

The Cannabis Plant & Common Misconceptions

When you hear someone talk about the cannabis plant, they may not realize that the plant is a sort of an umbrella term for two of its main species. The two species of the Cannabis Sativa L plant are:

  • the hemp plant

  • and the marijuana plant

Here’s where the misconceptions begin.

The marijuana plant is notoriously known for its psychoactive properties. This is not to say that the marijuana plant doesn’t have health benefits as well, as it absolutely does. In fact, people use marijuana every single day for its health benefits. However, the marijuana plant is also commonly used for recreational purposes (i.e. getting “high”).

While CBD tincture oil can be derived from the marijuana plant, marijuana CBD is only legal in states where medical marijuana has been legalized. Furthermore, CBD derived from marijuana is not safe for animal consumption.

The only CBD that is safe for animals is CBD derived from the hemp plant.

That said, when we speak about the potential health benefits of CBD for dogs, we’re specifically referring to CBD that is derived from the hemp plant, which is the other variety that falls under the Cannabis Sativa L. umbrella. Hemp is the non-psychoactive variety, meaning that it will not get your dog high.

Actually, it may surprise you how much hemp is already a part of your day-to-day life!  Industrial hemp, for instance, is used in making fabrics and fuel, and it’s likely you’ve seen hemp milk in your local grocery store.

Hemp seed oil is also used as a carrier oil in some CBD products. This seed oil has a natural flavor and can also be substituted with coconut oil in CBD or hemp products.

CBD hemp oil is safe because it has no more than 0.3% THC (short for tetrahydrocannabinol--the compound in cannabis that is psychoactive). When used appropriately, it will have virtually no harmful effects on your dog.

CBD Hemp Tinctures

Additionally, because hemp is legal in all 50 states, our CBD tinctures are also legal in all 50 states.

That means that no matter where you are in the country, your dog can benefit from all that CBD can provide.

How to Use a CBD Tincture

CBD oil tinctures are not only incredibly effective, but they are also easy to use.

First, pet parents should decide what level of CBD oil best suits their dog (we have included our recommendations below).

Each CBD tincture comes with a dropper that allows parents to measure exactly how much of the CBD oil tincture their dog will receive. This makes it easy to gradually introduce the CBD tincture into your dog's diet. (As we previously mentioned, we encourage pet owners not to rush the process.)

The CBD oil can be administered directly into the mouth or administered at mealtime. Again, using the dropper, pet parents are able to control every drop.

CBD Tincture Dosage for Dogs

We recommend choosing a tincture level based on your dog's weight. The following are the general guidelines for choosing the best CBD tincture level for your pup:

  • Purity Level 1 - Contains 125 mg of Cannabidiol and is best suited for dogs that weigh up to 25 lbs.

  • Purity Level 2 - Contains 250 mg of Cannabidiol and is best suited for dogs that weigh between 25-50 lbs.

  • Purity Level 3 - Contains 500 mg of Cannabidiol and is best suited for dogs that weigh over 50 lbs.

CBD Dog Bites

Once pet parents have introduced their dog to the world of CBD through our CBD tinctures, they may also want to try any of our other CBD products, such as our CBD dog bites. They’re available in several different flavors including peanut butter, turmeric, and poultry.

CBD dog bites and chews are just one more way that your furry friend can profit from the powerful herb!

Where To Buy Full Spectrum CBD Oil

We love that CBD is finally gaining the respect and attention that it deserves. However, with this rise in popularity, new copycats of all sorts are entering the scene almost every day.

With that in mind, one of the most important things to know about CBD is this: not all CBD is created equally.

We encourage pet parents to do their homework when it comes to purchasing a CBD product.

Here are just a few things to look out for:

  • Make sure that the CBD comes from a respected, reputable company that’s in good standing with the Better Business Bureau.

  • The CBD should be organic, non-GMO, soy free, 100% natural, full spectrum, and human grade. It should also be made from the hemp plant.

  • Only select CBD products for your pet that are certified with the NASC. Companies with a certification from the NASC (National Animal Supplement Council) undergo rigorous quality audits to ensure they're meeting the highest current standards in the animal health product industry. Purchasing CBD from an NASC-compliant company ensures you're doing business with a company that is both ethical and 100% dedicated to providing you with safe and high-standard products. This is significant, considering the alarming number of CBD products on the market today that actually contain ZERO CBD, according to a recent study.

  • Finally, only purchase CBD that has been lab tested to ensure quality and safety. The company you do business with should be able to furnish you with a certificate of analysis (COA) upon request, which is a laboratory report of the product’s chemical make-up. This allows you to make sure that the THC levels in the CBD product are low enough to not affect your canine friend.

Here at Honest Paws, we’re completely transparent about what goes into our CBD products. In fact, we’re proud to show the exact ingredients we use and the quality assurance you can expect from us!

We use 100% pure full spectrum CBD hemp oil from hemp plants cultivated in Colorado. Made in the USA and thoroughly lab tested, we guarantee the quality of our products.

Our CBD products are human grade, organic, 100% natural, and completely vegan. Additionally, they’re non-GMO, soy free, dairy free, corn free, and gluten free as well!

And we’re extremely proud to be certified with the National Animal Supplement Council on all our products. The organization came into existence when it was clear that no one was regulating the animal supplement industry. We know your animal companion is a part of your family, though, and should only receive the best quality when it comes to health and wellness. Our NASC certification is part of our dedication to ensuring we only provide you with the safest and highest standard of products.

Not many companies can say the same about their products!

Getting the Best of CBD Tinctures

Remember, if you’re buying a CBD product that is not 100% natural, then it’s entirely possible that the hemp plant was treated with chemicals.

Chemicals and pesticides completely detract from the potential health benefits that CBD has to offer and can ultimately cause even more issues for your dog's health.

While you may find products on the Internet that are cheaper, with CBD, you truly get what you pay for.

Once you opt for holistic wellness, make sure that you’re doing it in the best way possible (i.e. free of toxins!).

CBD Subscription

Like most good things, CBD products work best with consistency. Therefore, we encourage pet parents to consider a subscription service when it comes to the CBD product of their choice.

Not only will you save money in the long-run, but this also ensures that your fur baby never misses a dose.

With the popularity of subscription services these days, pet parents can choose the amount and potency of their desired CBD product as well as how often it’s delivered straight to their front door.

CBD Tincture: The Bottom Line

As always, we encourage our readers to consult with their holistic veterinarian regarding the best plan of action for their dog's individual needs.

We know that you want what's best for your dog, and the fact that we are living in a time where holistic health is more popular than ever makes us feel incredibly thankful.

We’re also grateful for the potential health benefits that CBD products can provide to our four-legged friends. Because at the end of the day, our pets are our family, and we love them very much.
